Hi! I'm Jenny, creator of The Gut Check Method: Heal the Gut, Optimize Your Health. I help purpose-driven people seeking to make a difference in the world to optimize their health and boost immunity.
My own journey towards living life fully through healing my gut began with death... the death of my mother. She had suffered from Rheumatoid Arthritis since the age of 26, and was eventually diagnosed with inflammatory breast cancer.
Watching her go through the horrors of chemo, I knew that there had to be a way to prevent others from going through the same thing. Through my research, I got turned on to the idea that both food and plants are our primary medicines, and have been so for thousands of years.
The stress of losing my mother to inflammatory breast cancer brought an already simmering candida infection in my own body to a full boil. Shortly after her death, not only were the symptoms I had always lived with getting worse, but I had a whole host of new and intense symptoms of yeast overgrowth emerging as well.
My mother, a nurse, had often told me that the symptoms I had always experienced were normal because she had always had them as well, so I had never given them much thought until everything intensified.
I was having increased issues with yeast, skin rashes, fatigue, brain fog, slower healing rates, greater susceptibility to infections, bloating, constipation, some type of fungal infection on my feet that just wouldn't go away, my anxiety was skyrocketing, my hair was starting to fall out, most things I ate made me feel bad... the list could continue on and on. The bottom line was that I had a general sense of just not feeling well and I was experiencing a lack of vitality.
I had heard of candida at the time, but had not spent much time looking into it until another practitioner suggested that I may be suffering from an overgrowth based on my symptoms. So I delved deeply into research and experimentation around healing from candida overgrowth.
As I learned more about candida, I unearthed the connection between it and the inflammatory autoimmune conditions from which my mother had suffered. I knew at that moment that everything had happened just as it had been meant to... that my mother's path was to set me on my own path of helping others heal before they had to suffer as she had.
When I first started practicing, I noticed that I wasn't the only one with this symptom picture—that many others were being held back from standing in their full power by their fatigue, anxiety, brain fog, and their susceptibility to getting sick in various ways. Much like myself, many other people felt like this was affecting the impact that they were able to make on the world around them.
As someone who has worked in the field of scientific research for 12 years and who holds a BS in chemical engineering from Carnegie Mellon University, I have an analytical mind and keen problem solving skills. So when I noticed that there was this symptom pattern between a number of clients, I turned to the research to put even more of the pieces together.
One study published by the National Institute of Health in 2008 states that gut-associated lymphoid tissue accounts for approximately 70% of the entire immune system. Another study published by the NIH in 2015 shows that changes in the intestinal microbiome can lead to breakdown in the intestinal layers of immunological defense that leaves the body susceptible to infections and various inflammatory conditions.
All of this was reinforced when I started my clinical herbal training with Ashley Litecky-Elenbaas at Sky House Herb School as well. We were learning about how Hippocrates, the father of modern medicine, was credited with the teaching "Let Food Be Thy Medicine". Paracelsus concluded that our Vital Force, the principal force that maintains and directs life, was housed in the gut.
Throughout my continued and various herbal studies with teachers like Matthew Wood, Phyllis Light, Margi Flint, Leslie Williams, Leslie Alexander, and Sam Coffman there was always this underlying theme: The gut is always a good place to start at the beginning of the healing process, and that food is indeed medicine. As I started working with others, I found it to be true that beginning the process of healing the gut led to major changes in how people were able to show up in their lives.
So, I took my background as a clinical herbalist, researcher, and health and nutrition coach, and I designed a system to guide people through the process of healing from within called The Gut Check Method: Heal the Gut, Optimize Your Health.
Through the process, we work together to restore and revitalize your physical, mental, and emotional well being. Once you’re in a space of balance, it allows you to show up with vitality, focus, and presence in all aspects of your life..
We do this through my 3 pronged proprietary methodology called Nourish, Meditate, and Move, which allows clients to experience more vitality and productivity so that they can be more present and effective in their work and personal lives. Ultimately, this leaves them feeling empowered, peaceful, and fulfilled.
